Free, prior and informed consent (FPIC) is a right recognized by international law a principle that the Ministry is adamant in incorporating in all development projects and programmes. FPIC principle argues that communities must be provided with all information regarding a programme; before they can freely decide on their next action. As we move towards sustainable development, the principle becomes more imperative for the iTaukei community.
The principle of FPIC is protected by international human rights law as “all peoples have the right to self-determination” and linked to the right to self-determination, “all peoples have the right to freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development”
Recognizing the rights of all iTaukei to freely give or withhold their consent to any decision that will affect their lands, territories or livelihoods will be the gist of the MTA FPIC Framework.
