A MOU was signed on Wednesday the 15th of July between the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs and the Women in Fisheries-Fiji. The Permanent Secretary for iTaukei Affairs, Mr Meleti Bainimarama and Mrs Mereseini Seniloli from the Women in Fisheries officated at the signing of the MOU.

In his speech, the Permanent Secreatry said that the work stipulated in the MOU will not only enhance collaboration between the organisation and the Ministry, but moreso solicit a mutual working platform in ensuring sustainability for all those who work in the Fisheries Sector at the grassroot level.

He further added that the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs through its work with the local communities, have not only ensured that resource owners are well equipped with the knowledge and skills in managing their local resources, but to explore ways and means to sustain these resources for the future. The National iTaukei Resources Owners Council, is one good example of the Ministry’s Initiative in promoting capacity development and in enhancing skills and knowledge of resource management and as well as building community resilience through empowerment. More initiatives between the Ministry and Women in Fisheries will surely contribute to a more vibrant community who are great custodians of our natural Resources.

The Women in Fisheries Network Fiji organisaion assists and promotes women and men in the fisheries sector in Fiji and contributes at the regional level. The organisation through scientists, experts and policy makers have worked with men and particularly women and the marginalised to improve their participation in the Fisheries sector.

Through their research, they have indicated that there is a shift from a more traditional involvement of women as providers of sustenance for families in the community to a more advanced economic platform. This trend is the same for all those who depend on the sea for their livelihood and as well as those who have resorted to the sea as a major source of income for their family and for their communities.

It is the Ministry's hope that the collaboration will have lasting impacts on the people that have been called to serve.
